Last updated: December 21, 2023

What Does Vajra Mudra Mean?

Vajra Mudra is a sacred hand gesture or "seal" that stimulates blood circulation. It is useful in treating low blood pressure, poor circulation and heart disease. Practicing vajra mudra may also relieve fatigue, as it provides energy to the vajra pulse, the strongest pulse in the body.

Follow these steps to practice vajra mudra:

  1. Find a stable sitting posture and place the hands on the thighs or the knees, palms facing up.
  2. On both hands, press your thumb to the middle fingernail.
  3. Press your ring finger on the other side of your middle fingernail, and your little finger at the side of your ring fingernail.
  4. Extend your index finger.

Practice this mudra for at least five minutes, up to three times per day as required. It should not be practiced by those with high blood pressure.

The vajra mudra is also known as the "Gesture of the Fiery Thunderbolt."

Yogapedia Explains Vajra Mudra

Problems with circulation tend to arise from a weakness in the Earth Element, which is associated with the stomach, spleen, pancreas and heart. Vajra mudra is balancing for all elements, as it incorporates the little finger (symbolic of water), ring finger (symbolic of earth), middle finger, (symbolic of air) and thumb (symbolic of fire). Combining the elements through this practice helps to strengthen the vajra pulse.

Vajra mudra can be used to ease symptoms of low blood pressure, such as dizziness and fatigue, whilst also stimulating the blood circulation. When practiced regularly, it can help to boost the immune system, increase memory power and sharpen the mind.

To maximize the benefits of vajra mudra, it can be practiced alongside side bending and back bending yoga asana. In addition, massaging the root of the nose, the center of the forehead, the back of the head or the nape of the neck with the middle finger can help to increase vajra mudra effects.
