What Does Root Lock Mean?

Root lock is one of the four types of locks in yoga. Locks, or bandhas, are practiced to regulate prana in particular parts of the body.

To practice root lock, assume padmasana or siddhasana. Keep the eyes closed and let the palms rest on the knees. With the focus on the pelvic region, breathe slowly and deeply. Hold the breath while contracting and lock the pelvic floor muscles. Remain in the lock, holding the breath. Release and inhale, repeating the series 10 times.

Root lock is called mula bandha in Sanskrit.

Yogapedia Explains Root Lock

The four classifications of bandhas (energetic locks or seals) are mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, jalandhara bandha and maha bandha. Some yogis classify locks into three types and describe the maha bandha as a practice that involves the first three locks.

The location of the root lock is at the root chakra, which is at the base of the spine. The root lock promotes the flow of energy to the rectum. It redirects sexual energy to creative energy. This lock may also eliminate illness and promote vital energy. Regular practice of the root lock awakens kundalini power.
